PDQ GIRLS INVITATIONAL LEAGUE

Organised by John Mulholland of PDQ Solutions under the guidance of the Women’s Department at the IFA, the 11-a-side league will commence in October. It is anticipated that the leagues will be played at the weekend (depending on availability of pitches).The age groups are as follows:

Under 14 (DOB: On or after 1 January 1995)
Under 16 (DOB: On or after 1 January 1993)

In addition to the league competition the Irish FA will be organising the Tesco Cup, a knock out competition in which the winner from each age group will go forward to represent Northern Ireland in the National Finals in England. All expenses for the trip will be funded by Tesco and your club will have the opportunity to compete against the top teams in England, Wales and Scotland.

The timeframe for the implementation of this league is as follows:

Friday 29 August - Expression of interest submitted
Monday 1 or Wednesday 3 September - Meeting for interested teams
Friday 3 October - Player registration deadline
Friday 10 - Saturday 12 October - League commences
December - January Break
February - March League concludes
April - Tesco Cup Regional Final
May - Tesco Cup National Finals, England

The Flames will compete in the Mid Ulster Tournament on Saturday the 6th of September held in Omagh , the flames will compete in the u13 and u15 age groups. 

The u16 team will play Lagan Harps on Saturday the 23rd of August at Mannorcuningham K.o 3p.m

Flames Competed in the Shrewsbury International Tournament on Saturday the 9th August. The Flames won there 1st two games by beating Shrewsbury Town’s A Team and B team  1 goal to nil on both occassions. The Flames played Mandley town in the Final. Mandley took the lead early and within 10 minutes were 1 goal ahead, then on the 17th minute Natasha Milligan broke down the right handside and advanced close to the by-line, cut back and found herself with just the keeper to beat Natasha placed the ball calmly into the far bottom corner. With the two teams even, The Flames kept pilling on the pressure to the opposition, Mandley. The Flames then got a break through after all the pressure they put on the goal came from a sweeping counter attack play. The ball was cleared from the corner and Natasha Deane collected the ball deep into her own half and carried to ball down the left hand side, cut inside to her right foot and got her head up early and calmy placed a neat pass back to Kate Edwards who blasted it past the Mandley keeper on the 25 minute mark. From then on it was only one side that was going to win as a result of constant pressure and the one goal advantage. After the interval the Flames increased there lead to a comfortable two goal margin as a result of playing the football which in the first half had gained them the lead going into the break. The third goal was what seemed to be the best goal of the tournament from the evidence of the earlier games. Lowry Edwards who was battling hard in middle of the park all day got the reward she deserved. Her terrior like style of play paid off when she battled for the ball on the centre-circle of the oppositions half and neatly won the ball, advanced with the ball for another 15 yards and from around the 35 yard mark put her head down and blasted the ball into the top left hand corner.  Then against the run of play Mandley somehow seemed to score against the run of play. The Flames then restored the two goal margin which they had worked hard to regain. The game was what seemed to be open at this stage of the game as both teams were playing good football. The Flames like their second goal got another goal from a quick counter-attack. Lowry Edwards supplied a ball that cut the oppositions defence open and was placed perfect for Stevena Brown to run onto. She was caught up by the defenders and was forced a bit out wide, she neatly got past the defenders with some quick foot-work and the found the keeper to be advancing at her. With a quick bit of improivation Stevena looked up and slotted a ball to an advancing Kate Edwards who found herself with an open net. With the two goal lead regained this left The Flames with a player on course for a hat-trick and the final theirs to only throw away. The Flames then kept the pressure on their opponents and was advancing with some great attacks but with a few debatable offside decisions could only keep a two goal lead. However The Flames got a fifth goal. The ball was collected in her own half by Flames captain Kathy Kelly who advanced with the ball into the oppositions half and slipped a neat ball through to Kate Edwards who was perfectly placed on the shoulder of the last defender and as a result of both a great pass and movement found herself one on one with the goalkeeper. Kate kept a cool head and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to get herself a deserved  hat-trick in the final. Mandley however did not give up on the game and even though finding theirselves three goals down in the final kept battling and got theirselves a third goal and cut the flames advantage down to a two goal lead.

All subs were used  in the final and throughout the tournament.

Training

Training days and times are changed to a Monday and Wednesday night starting on Monday the 18th of August .

Under 14 are Monday and Wednesdays nights from 6pm to 7.30pm at Gransha

under 16 and Ladies are Monday and Wednesday nights from 7pm to 8.30pm at Gransha 

The Flames will compete in the Dale Farm Festival Sunday 31 August 2008 at the Ozone Sports Complex, Belfast.The Flames will compete in the following age groups, u13, 7 a side, u15, 7 a side, u17, 5 a side and  Ladies 5 a side.

Nutrition and diet  

Nutrition and diet is an area we can all improve on and as coaches we are in a strong position to influence players to become healthier.

In simple terms, what we eat and drink provides the fuel for us to train, play and recover from training. What we need to know is what is the best fuel?

Carbo education for the benefit of the players

Carbohydrates are recognised to have the most immediate affect on the players’ performance, so in this issue we are going to help you educate your team to eat better to operate better. It is impractical to give them specific diet sheets because of the variety of home cooking circumstances (e.g. mothers, partners, flatmates, schools). However, an appreciation of the benefits will help them choose better options and encourage them to either influence their cooks, or even cook the food themselves!

  

Low fat carbs for low fat players

Despite the horrors outlined by some trendy diets, there are many staple foods which provide excellent sources of carbohydrates e.g. potatoes and pasta. The key though is to avoid high carb foods with high fat content. This will mean that high consumption will also lead to weight gain. For example, crisps and pizza are two hazards to be avoided.

What’s good to eat?

Some good, low fat, high carb foods are: rice, popcorn, breakfast cereals, fruit, toast and honey, potatoes, pasta. Some treats as well: sweets e.g. fruit gums, chocolate and even Coca Cola (though this drink is not a substitute for water).

Baked potatoes and sandwiches are good “whole” meals, with fillings which avoid too much fat making an even healthier option. So cut down on the butter, cheese and mayonnaise and use baked beans, lean meats and low fat cheeses.

Keep the balance

A diet cannot just be carbohydrates, but also protein, fat and hydration. It is worth asking players what they are eating and drinking, if only to help them make their own more informed decisions.

FACTS BOX

On average, carbohydrates makes up at least half of a player’s total energy intake.

In soccer, the intensity of the sport means that carbohydrates are the primary energy source.

All milk has the same carbohydrate content, but differs in fat content, therefore soccer players would do better to drink semi skimmed or skimmed milk.

There is little evidence to suggest any difference for performance on whether a player should eat complex carbohydrates (e.g. pasta or potatoes) and simple carbohydrates (e.g. sweets and fruit

Fixtures

The u13 and u15 will play Sion Swifts this Thursday the 26th of June at Sion Swifts ground k.o 7pm. The both teams will compete against Sion Swifts in  7 a side games.  

The girls will travel to the Carrickfergus tournament  on Saturday July the 19th. The flames will enter a U13 5 a side team u15 7 a side team and a Ladies 5 a side team. After the compettion the girls will get free entry to the final of the Carrick cup 11 a side Ladies International Tournament.
